Signs of bed bugs in a Sydney apartment (and what to do tonight)
The clearest signs of bed bugs are bites in lines or clusters on skin that was uncovered overnight, dark ink-like spotting on mattress piping, and pale shed skins near the bed. Tonight: sleep in the same room, strip and hot-wash the bedding, and vacuum the mattress seams and bed frame. Then book an inspection, because they will not leave on their own.
The signs that matter
Bed bug bites usually show up in lines or small clusters, often on arms, shoulders and legs. They itch, but bites alone are not proof, because mosquitoes and fleas bite too. The evidence on the bed itself is what confirms it.
Check with your phone torch. Peel back the mattress piping, look along the bed frame joints, behind the headboard and along the skirting directly behind the bed. In apartments, also check bedside tables and the power points near the bed.
- Dark spotting on mattress piping and tags, like a felt-tip pen dot
- Pale, papery shed skins in the seams and corners of the bed frame
- Tiny white eggs, about 1mm, glued into cracks and folds
- Live bugs, flat and apple-seed sized, hiding in seams during the day
- A sweet, musty smell in the room when numbers are high
Why apartments make it urgent
In a house, bed bugs stay around the bed for a while. In an apartment block they have highways: wall voids, pipe runs, corridors and shared laundries. One untreated unit can reseed the neighbours, and the neighbours can reseed you.
Sydney buildings also see constant turnover. Renters move, travellers visit, and second-hand furniture comes through the door. That is how most infestations start, and it is why treating early, while they are still around one bed, is far cheaper than treating a whole unit.
If you are in a unit block, mention it when you book. Treatment in apartments works best when the neighbouring risk is understood, and if the building has had bed bugs before, the building manager should know. Quiet, early treatment is what keeps a small problem from becoming a strata meeting topic.
What to do tonight
None of this clears an infestation on its own. It buys you a night or two of fewer bites and stops the problem spreading while you book a proper treatment.
- Sleep in your normal bed. Moving rooms spreads them through the unit
- Strip the bedding, bag it in the room, hot wash it, then 30 minutes on high heat in the dryer
- Vacuum the mattress seams, bed frame and carpet edge, then empty the vacuum into a sealed bag
- Pull the bed slightly off the wall and clear clutter from under it
- Skip the spray can. It scatters them deeper into the walls
What not to do
Do not set off a bug bomb or fogger. The mist does not reach the seams and wall voids where bed bugs hide, and the irritant drives them deeper into the unit and towards the neighbours. In apartment blocks this is how one treatable problem becomes three.
Do not drag the mattress to the bin room yet. Most mattresses can be treated in place, and dragging one through shared corridors drops bugs and eggs along the way. If it genuinely needs disposing of, wrap it fully before it leaves the room. And do not blame yourself. Bed bugs feed on blood, not dirt, and the cleanest apartment in Sydney can get them.

Common questions
Can you see bed bugs with the naked eye?
Yes. Adults are flat, brown and about the size of an apple seed. After feeding they swell and turn darker red. The young ones are smaller and paler, but still visible if you know where to look.
Do bed bugs mean my apartment is dirty?
No. Bed bugs feed on blood, not crumbs, and they arrive on luggage, clothing and second-hand furniture. The cleanest apartment in Sydney can get them after one trip or one second-hand buy.
Will bed bugs go away on their own?
No. They feed every few days, breed steadily and hide too well to die out. Left alone, a few become hundreds over a couple of months, and in a unit block they spread to the neighbours.
How do bed bugs get into apartments?
They hitchhike. Luggage after a trip, a second-hand bed or couch, visitors' bags and shared laundries are the usual ways in. In older blocks they can also move between units through wall voids and pipe runs.
